Apply WHS Policies and Procedures in the Construction Industry overview

This course covers the fundamental WHS necessary to undertake work tasks within any sector in the construction industry. It includes the identification of hazardous materials, including asbestos, and compliance with legislated work safety practices. It does not cover removal of asbestos, which is a licensed activity.

Students will attain the practical application and understanding required to Apply WHS Policies and Procedures in the Construction Industry and will be able to:

  • Risk Identification and Assessment: Identify, assess, and report work area hazards, follow safe work practices, and contribute to WHS reports as per legislative requirements.
  • Hazardous Materials Management: Safely handle hazardous materials, apply immediate risk control measures, use signage for hazardous areas, and report any asbestos materials found.
  • Safe Work Preparation: Use and store personal protective equipment correctly, select tools and plan tasks, erect necessary barricades and signage, and apply MSDSs, JSAs, and SWMSs for safety.
  • Safe Work Practices: Carry out tasks safely, use plant and equipment guards as required, report hazards and incidents, and follow work site safety signs and procedures.
  • Emergency Procedures: Identify emergency contacts for communication, follow established emergency protocols, practice evacuation procedures, and provide first aid while reporting all treatments accurately.

Construction Safety Officers are responsible for ensuring that safety protocols and regulations are followed on construction sites. These roles involve conducting safety inspections, implementing safety programs, and ensuring compliance with health and safety laws.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct Safety Inspections: Regularly inspect construction sites to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  2. Implement Safety Programs: Develop and implement safety protocols and training programs for site workers.
  3. Compliance Monitoring: Ensure all site activities comply with relevant health and safety regulations.
  4. Incident Investigation: Lead investigations into accidents or near-misses to identify causes and prevent future occurrences.

  • Regional and Remote Sites: Positions in regional areas like Geraldton, Port Hedland, and the Pilbara, often involving FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) arrangements.
