Personal Survival Techniques overview

The MARF046 – Survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment and personal survival techniques (PST) course provides essential skills and knowledge for surviving at sea using personal survival techniques (PST) in the event of vessel abandonment. It is specifically designed for deck and engine workers in the maritime industry who need to obtain a Certificate of Safety Training.

Students will attain the theory and practical application to survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment and personal survival techniques (PST) properly and will be able to:

Element 1: Respond to Emergency

  • Recognize emergency situations correctly.
  • Activate muster and abandon vessel signals according to organizational procedures.
  • Provide prompt, accurate, and clear information when raising an alarm.
  • Give instructions to crew and passengers to maximize their chances of survival.
  • Operate emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRB) and search and rescue transponders (SARTs) to transmit distress signals.
  • Make distress calls using radio equipment on distress call frequency to communicate the nature of the emergency.

Element 2: Operate Survival Craft and Rescue Boats

  • Give orders to survivors to board the survival craft or rescue boat using appropriate means.
  • Clear and operate the survival craft or rescue boat according to organizational procedures and manufacturer instructions.
  • Use sea anchors and drogues to remain within the vicinity of the abandoned vessel and to minimize the effects of adverse weather and sea conditions.
  • Deploy exposure covers on open lifeboats according to manufacturer instructions.

Element 3: Operate Lifesaving and Survival Equipment Onboard Survival Craft and Rescue Boats

  • Establish the location and accessibility of all lifesaving and survival equipment.
  • Check and operate survival equipment according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Don and use lifesaving equipment correctly according to manufacturer instructions.

  1. Must be 18 years old and above
  2. Present photo I.D. on arrival
  3. Complete a ‘Fitness to Complete Training’ form upon arrival at the training facility. The student is required to declare any medical issue that may exclude them from full participation
  4. Please bring a towel and appropriate swim attire for the in-water activities.
  5. Ability to read, write and understand English
