Certificate of Safety Training (COST) overview

The entry-level Certificate of Safety Training (COST) is essential for personnel working on Australian-registered vessels operating in international waters. This certification ensures a basic level of competence in personal survival techniques, fire prevention and firefighting, emergency procedures, and shipboard accident prevention, all aimed at reducing incidents and saving lives at sea.

The Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) is regulated in Australia by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the national agency responsible for maritime safety and certification.

Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the operations and risks associated with Certificate of Safety Training (COST), and will be able to:

Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (STCW Code A-VI/1):

    • Understand and apply essential safety procedures and social responsibilities on board.
    • Promote a safety culture and effective teamwork in the maritime environment.
    • Recognize and respond appropriately to shipboard hazards and emergencies.

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW Code A-VI/1-2):

    • Identify and mitigate fire risks on board vessels.
    • Effectively use firefighting equipment and extinguishing techniques.
    • Conduct and participate in fire drills and emergency response procedures.

Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Code A-VI/1-1):

    • Demonstrate survival skills and techniques for use in maritime emergencies.
    • Properly use life-saving appliances and survival equipment.
    • Perform survival procedures and techniques in simulated maritime scenarios.

Security Awareness Training (STCW Code A-VI/6-1):
