Earthmoving Machinery Refresher Training in Perth: Get Back in the Seat with Confidence

Skills fade when you step away from the controls. Whether you have been off the tools for a few months, you are mobilising to a new site, or you just want to knock the rust off before a start date, getting back into a machine cold is not the way to do it. A short, focused practical refresher rebuilds your muscle memory, sharpens your technique and restores the confidence that keeps you safe and productive on site.

Saferight Training Academy runs practical refresher training across a selected range of its earthmoving machines, designed for qualified operators who already hold their ticket and want hands-on time back in the seat. These are purely practical sessions. There is no classroom theory and no reassessment, just real operating time on real machinery at Saferight’s Midland training site in Perth, Western Australia.

This guide explains what a refresher involves, which machines you can train on, what it costs, and who should book one.

Important disclaimer: Saferight’s practical refresher courses are non-accredited. They are not nationally recognised training and they are not a Verification of Competency (VOC). On completion, students receive a Statement of Attendance only, not a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment. To attend, you must already hold the relevant Unit of Competency for the machine you want to refresh on.

What Is an Earthmoving Practical Refresher?

A practical refresher is a short session that gives a qualified operator dedicated time back on a machine to rebuild practical skill, confidence and familiarity. It is not a course that qualifies you from scratch, and it does not re-issue or renew your accreditation. Think of it as supervised seat time with an experienced instructor, structured around the practical component of the relevant earthmoving unit.

For the Excavator Practical Refresher, for example, students work through the practical component covered in RIIMPO320F – Conduct Civil Construction Excavator Operations, but as a refresher only. You are not being formally assessed for a new qualification. You are getting back to operating the machine smoothly and safely.

Because these sessions are non-accredited, they suit operators who are already ticketed and simply need recent, practical reacquaintance with the equipment before heading back to work.

Who Should Book a Refresher?

Practical refreshers are built for qualified operators in a few common situations.

  • Operators returning after a break often find their timing and feel for a machine have slipped, even when the underlying knowledge is intact. A refresher restores that feel quickly.
  • Workers mobilising to a new site or contractor sometimes need to demonstrate recent operating practice before they start. A documented refresher session shows you have had your hands on the controls.
  • Employers building a reliable workforce use refreshers to keep their ticketed operators current and confident, reducing risk during the first days back on a job.

If you have never held the relevant ticket, a refresher is not for you. You would need to complete the full accredited course first. The refresher exists to top up existing competency, not to create it.

Machines You Can Refresh On

Saferight offers practical refreshers across six earthmoving machines. You must already hold the relevant Unit of Competency for the machine you choose.

Whichever machine you book, the structure is the same: a focused practical session that gets you back to operating with confidence.

What Happens in a Practical Refresher

Refreshers run as a single four-hour practical session at Saferight’s Midland site, with two start times to suit your day. The AM session runs from 7:30am to 11:30am, and the PM session runs from 11:30am to 3:30pm. Pick whichever works for your roster.

During the session you spend your time operating the machine under the guidance of an experienced Saferight instructor. The focus is on practical skill, control and familiarity, not paperwork. You will work through the practical tasks relevant to the machine, rebuild your technique and finish the session feeling ready to operate.

The Excavator Practical Refresher is priced at $350, giving qualified operators a cost-effective way to get current before returning to work. Group and onsite bookings are also available, either at your site or at Saferight’s, with pricing on enquiry.

Morning tea and refreshments are provided for all courses run at Saferight, and there are kitchen facilities on site for anyone who prefers to bring their own lunch, with cafes and lunch bars close by.

Entry Requirements and What to Bring

Because a refresher tops up existing competency, the entry requirements centre on proving you are already qualified. To attend, you must:

  • Already hold, and provide a copy of, your Statement of Attainment for the relevant Unit of Competency (for the Excavator Refresher, that is RIIMPO320F).
  • Hold a valid Class C driver’s licence as a minimum. Recent arrivals can use an international C-Class licence, which is valid for up to three months before a WA licence or International Driver Permit is required.
  • Present valid photo ID on arrival.
  • Wear normal work clothing and enclosed footwear, and remove all jewellery before starting.
  • Be able to read, write and understand English. Saferight supports students with Language, Literacy and Numeracy needs and encourages you to get in touch before enrolling if you have any concerns.
  • Complete the post-enrolment learner details form sent in your booking confirmation email before attending. Certificates will not be issued if this form is not completed.

If you have a physical condition that may affect your ability to complete the course, please obtain a “Fit for Work” certificate from your doctor and send it to Saferight’s bookings email. Please note that student visa holders are not eligible to enrol, as Saferight is not CRICOS-registered.
